A 57-year-old tailor was arrested in Bankura district’s Chhatna area for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl inside his shop. According to local sources, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when the minor went to the shop next door in search of cloth pieces for her doll. The accused, identified as Sheikh Ahiya, allegedly took her inside the shop under that pretext and shut the shutter before committing the assault.
After the incident came to light, the girl's family filed a written complaint at Chhatna police station. Acting on the complaint, police arrested the accused the same night. The minor underwent a medical examination and is currently under care. The family has demanded the death penalty for the accused.
Police have registered a case under Section 65(2) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. On Monday, the accused was produced before the Bankura district court.
